41%
That’s the % of employees who left a job because they saw no opportunity for career advancement in 2022 according to McKinsey.
It beats out the number who left because of inadequate compensation (36%) and bad bosses (34%).
This resonates because I know I’ve left positions because I saw no opportunity for career advancement. Sometimes that has been despite my expressed desire with requests to map a course for advancement.
Some of the rationale for not mapping a course?
“Oh, well, you’re good, so when something comes up, we’ll consider you” (trust us argument)
or “Most people spend X years in this role before being promoted and you have only been in it for Y years” (pay your dues argument).
Neither of these inspired confidence in me that my growth as an employee and the progression of my career were something I could trust to my bosses within those organizations.
Have you had a similar experience? What rationale was used in your case?
